Bellaghy Bawn
Marked as Bellaghy Castle on OS maps, this building is more correctly called a Bawn. A Bawn is a fortified house. This one was built as part of the Plantation of Ulster by the Vintners' Company of London who were granted the land around Bellaghy in 1619. It was intended as a place of refuge in times of trouble. The round tower in the photograph dates from at least 1622.

Bellaghy Bawn Centre for Poetry and History
It is a 17th century Plantation house, which is the best restored example of its kind in Northern Ireland. Original manuscripts of the renowned poet Seamus Heaney are kept on display here. He was born on 13 April 1939 at the family farmhouse called Mossbawn, between Castledawson and Toomebridge in Northern Ireland and now lives in Dublin More at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seamus_Heaney
