Tree and footpath, Belfast
The Earlswood Road was laid out towards the end of the 19th century so its trees have had plenty of time to grow. This one (with a diameter of some 88 inches) has taken up most of the footpath. The roots of some of its neighbours have caused the tarmac to crack. The houses, on this side of the road, are substantial ones, set well back from any possibility of undermining and subsidence.

Grating, Belfast
Grating, on the eastern side of the Earlswood Road, cast by The Patent Gully Co Ltd of Nottingham – a company of which I cannot find any trace on the web. Further information welcome. Replaced after resurfacing in January 2012.

The Earlswood Road, Belfast (3)
Laid out and developed towards the end of the 19th century, the Earlswood Road includes some sizeable detached houses in substantial grounds. Some years ago, when one came on the market in an executors’ sale, there was a proposal to build a considerable number of apartments on the site. Instead some large detached houses, with proper gardens, were built and are now an accepted part of the scenery.

"Atlanta" grating cover, Belfast
A drain cover, on the Earlswood Road
Image, bearing the name “Atlanta”. This might refer to a foundry in Atlanta, Georgia. On the other hand it has the British Standards kitemark. The inscription etc is reversed in the original.

The Earlswood Road, Belfast (5)
A treacherous Earlswood Road looking towards the Belmont Road. A minute, or so, earlier I saw a very slow-moving car skid.

The Cavanagh foundry (Birr) uses the names of various animals and other wildlife for some of its products. This “lion” grating cover is at the corner of Kincora Avenue and the Earlswood Road.
