Permanent way train, Kilroot, Carrickfergus
Not one of my better photographs but the subject is of interest. On a day when the Civil Engineer’s Department had absolute possession of the down line, MV locomotive no 106 is propelling a single wagon of sleepers along the up line. Re-sleepering of the up line was underway near Cloghan. The train is passing Kilroot salt mine.

The Kilroot Salt Mine Jetty
Irish Salt Mining and Exploration (I.S.M.E.) has been mining De-Icing Rock Salt at its Kilroot Mine since 1965. Import and Export is handled through a deep water berth alongside the jetty with a loading conveyor running directly from storage facilities at the mine site.
