Off-licence prices are generally cheaper in the north and the sale of fireworks is banned in the south where the Criminal Justice Act 2006 makes the ownership of fireworks without a licence illegal. Penalties for the illegal possession of fireworks include fines to €10,000 and/or up to five years in prison. Despite such draconian laws southerners flock around Halloween and New Year's Eve to the border where temporary shops housed in shipping containers offer a range of fireworks.
