Old YHANI Youth Hostel at Knockbarragh Park, nr Rostrevor, Co Down
The Youth Hostel Association of Northern Ireland ran several establishments in the hills north of Rostrevor over the years. The first was in a grand mansion at Knockbarragh Park; it operated from 1935 to 1947. Here is a 2005 view of the side of the building, from the Park entrance gates to the east. The hostel was replaced by one a mile or two away, in two military-style huts (1950 - 1970). Occasionally a small cottage adjacent to the huts, Lechan Lodge, was used as a stand-by. Lechan Lodge finally closed in 1973. Please contact if you have any tales to tell of old hostels like this.
