Downpatrick's First Non-Subscribing Presbyterian Church, Stream Street
A Non-Subscribing Presbyterian Church has stood on this site since 1711. Prior to that the congregation, founded in 1650 met in the Flying Horse in Ballyvange townland where their first minister was a Royalist at a time of fierce Cromwellian oppression. This gives a clue to the unique nature of Non-Subscribing Presbyterianism. A much less dogmatic and sectarian church than the mainstream Presbyterian Churches in Ireland, Scotland or Wales or of the breakaway Free Presbyterian Church associated with Dr Ian Paisley, and with its creed, such as it exists, based on reason and consience, it has much in common with the early dissenters that formed the Congregationalist churches and with the Unitarians. The chapel has seating for 800 people.
