Old road, Lisburn
This piece of old road leads from the Antrim Road to the North Circular Road Image (background). I have always thought that it was part of the original alignment of the road but further information is welcome. The bollards, at the top, are a relatively-recent arrangement. Before their installation some drivers used it to avoid a queue at the end of the North Circular Road.

NIR fertiliser train at Lisburn
See Image (May 1985). One of the rare Belfast (Adelaide yard Image) – Londonderry fertiliser trains, hauled by 113 “Belfast and County Down” crossing to the third line at Lisburn. They were booked to depart at 08.40. This one was passing Lisburn at 09.07.

All changed at Lisburn station
All changed now. (Left to right) The signal gantry has been replaced by colour lights. The locomotive is a memory. The two chimneys and Barbour’s Mill have been demolished and replaced by the Bow Street Mall. The old goods shed and semaphore signals have gone too. The track has been re-laid and the rods have gone with the semaphores. I can’t be certain but it’s most likely that the “Atlas” rail/road crane has disappeared too.

Disc signals, Lisburn station
See Image GNR(I) pattern disc signals (down direction) on the Portadown/Dublin side of Lisburn station. Disc signals were used to control movements in yards and over trailing crossovers on the running line. The red and green spectacles have different shapes.

Irish Rail railcars, Lisburn (1)
A four-car set of “2600” class railcars arriving at Lisburn, empty, from Dundalk. It was used to work a 17.45 to Dublin. The photograph was taken at 17.40. With little leeway for any operational problems (including passengers heaving luggage over the footbridge) it did well to depart only two minutes late. In the background locomotive 233 is running round the “Enterprise” stock Image

Freight train, Lisburn
Cross-Border freight is now history. In this shot two CIE locomotives double-head an evening freight from Belfast’s Adelaide yard to Dundalk. Traffic was seldom heavy enough to justify double heading – this was simply a way of avoiding a light-engine working.
