The Grove Road gable of Spa's Assembly Rooms
This fine building dates back to the 1840s and was built by the Ker family of innovative local landowners as a ball-room for visitors to the Spa. The building has been variously known as the ball room, the assembly rooms, and the Spa road-house. The Spa was particularly popular with visitors from Belfast from the 1790s. The Spa thrived until the construction in 1869 of a railway from Belfast to the seaside town of Newcastle after which The Spa went into rapid decline. The building now houses a masonic lodge.

The elaborately carved sandstone datestone, liberally embellished with shamrocks, on Spa Presbyterian church Image showing the date “AD 1872”. It has survived well unlike this example of 1902 Image – possibly due to the cleaner and less corrosive country air.
