Battle of Saintfield memorial, Saintfield
A stone in memory of those who died during the Battle of Saintfield Image in 1798. Nationally, it involved the United Irishmen http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Society_of_United_Irishmen and His Majesty’s army. In Saintfield’s case it was the York Fencibles http://www.royalyork.org.uk/. Fencible regiments were the approximate equivalent of what was later to be known as “home service battalions”.
