The Reformed Presbyterian Church, Lower Mary Street, Newtownards
Reformed Presbyterianism broke away from mainstream Presbyterianism when it refused to recognised the Williamite Settlement of 1690 on the grounds that its theology contravened that of the Solemn League and Covenant of 1643. The Covenanters, as they style themselves, are a small denomination. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reformed_Presbyterian_Church_of_Ireland Image

Strean Presbyterian Church, Mary Street, Newtownards
This congregation was formed following a quarrel over the appointment of a new minister for the town's 1st Presbyterian Church. The unsuccessful faction left to form a church of their own, a not uncommon occurrence in Ulster Presbyterianism. The new church, opened in 1866, was bank rolled by Thomas Strean, a wealthy businessman of the town.
