Gravestone at Bangor Abbey. "Here lieth the body of Lettetia Lamont who departed this life February the 28th 1785 aged 16 years. Also Jean Lamont who departed this life September the 23rd 1798 aged 22 years, daughters of Andrew Lamont, of Ballyree. Also Andrew Lamont, son of the above Andrew Lamont, who died 4th March 1860 aged 74 years. And his wife Jane Campbell. Also six of his daughters:- Elizabeth, Letitia, Ellen, Agnes, Mary Ann & Nessy. His son John died 26th May 1885 aged 66 years. Also Jane, wife of the above John Lamont, died 2nd March 1897."

This is located on the A21 adjacent to Bangor Abbey.

Gravestone at Bangor Abbey, it lies flat on the grass. "Here lieth the body of David Robinson, of Donaghadee, who departed this life March the 7th 1776 aged 63 years."

Gravestone at Bangor Abbey. "Sacred to the memory of John Moffet of Bangor, who died 25th January 1832 aged 73 years. Also his wife Isabella Moffet alias Kennedy, who died 18th April 1833 aged 68 years. Also their only son James who was drowned near Kingston, Jamaica, 22nd April 1829 aged 25 years. But oh: there was hope in that dear sailor's death For in youth he had learned his Redeemer to love. On that Saviour he called with his last parting breath To receive him in peace to the mansions above. Also their grand-daughter Isabella M'Kerral* who died 21st August 1849 aged 16 years." * possibly McKerral

Gravestone at Bangor Abbey, unusual in that it features a variety of flowers whereas those surrounding have just grass. "Erected by James McWhinney of Ballyvernon, in memory of his son James who departed this life 8th February 1838 aged 19 years. Here lys a child bemoan'd by father dear, With manners gentle and a soul sincere, A sorrowing mother's hope and only pride, And ne'er gave cause for grief but when he died. Sleep on sweet child, death's bitterness is o'er, And hope looks forward to a brighter shore, Sleep on in peace, the Sabbath of thy Tomb, And wake in raptures in the world to come. And also his wife Jane who died 1871, and also his daughter Mary Ann who died 1st December 1875." Ballyvernon is an old area of what is now greater Bangor, but not a townland.

Gravestone at Bangor Abbey. Kenn is an unusual and uncommon surname in Bangor. "Erected by Captain Findlyson Kenn, Aberdeen, Scotland. In memory of Ann Kenn his wife, who departed this life on the 12th of July 1834 aged 31 years. She left the world without a tear, Save for the friends she held so dear: To heal their sorrows Lord descend, And to the friendless prove a friend. Also in memory of Charles Kenn his brother who perished at sea, with all his crew, by the foundering of his vessel in March 1835. His voice commands the tempest forth, And stills the stormy wave: And though his arm be strong to smite T'is also strong to save. Also in memory of Elizabeth Kenn his mother who departed this life on the 27th February 1836 aged 73 years. T'is God who lifts our comforts high Or sinks them to the grave: He gives and when he takes away, He takes but what he gave."

View from the north.

Archibald (Archibel) Wilson was hanged on 26 June 1798 for his part in the 1798 rebellion (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_Rebellion_of_1798 ). He rates three lines in one of the daily newspaper inventories of those dispatched for their perceived treachery: ‘Tuesday last, Archibald Wilson, mason, was executed at Conlig, between Newtownards and Bangor, having been found guilty by Court Martial of Rebellion and Treason.’ See also another picture at Image The gravestone inscription reads: "Here lieth the body of Archibel Wilson of Conlig who departed this life June the 26 in anno 1798, eg 26yr. Morn not, deer frends, tho I’m no more. Tho I was martred, your eyes before I am not dead, but do sleep hear. And yet once more I will apeer. That is when time will be no more. When thel be judged who falsely sore. And them that judged will judged be. Whither just or on just, then thel see Purpere, deer frends, for that grate day. When death dis sumance you away I will await you all with due care. In heven with joy to meet you there."
