The pile of debris in the foreground is the remains of industrial buildings which once occupied the site. The precise location is now the entrance to the small car park serving Loughside Park. The terraces of houses and the small shopping parade remain, as do the crags of Cave Hill in the background. Trolleybus 246 was the last trolleybus built for Belfast, in 1958, and was intended to be the forerunner of a fleet of new trolleybuses. Shortly afterwards the works connected with the reconstruction of the Lagan bridge prompted a decision to convert trolleybus operation to motorbuses and it remained a unique vehicle for Belfast. It was a Sunbeam F4A with locally built Harkness body and was the only 30 foot long 2-axle trolleybus in the Belfast fleet. It is seen here on an enthusiast tour, newly repainted prior to being sold for preservation to the London Trolleybus Preservation Society. It is currently based at the East Anglia Transport Museum. Properties, on the western side of the Shore Road, of which only no 564 (right) is occupied. This had been vacant ground until the 1950’s. I cannot find any current planning permission for the site.

By this time all regular scheduled passenger services on Northern Ireland Railways were operated by diesel trains, with steam limited to special operation. This was a service for football supporters from Derry to Belfast, hauled by 'Jeep' 53. These class WT 2-6-4 tank locomotives were built at the LMS works in Derby for the LMS(NCC) and the UTA, and were in use from 1947 until mid-1970s. The nickname derives from their use as general purpose locomotives, for both passenger and freight traffic.
