Tribute to Richard Mussen a soldier of the Shankill
This mural provides the history of the Shankill war hero Richard Mussen who served in both the Zulu War and WWI. Mussen joined the Royal Inniskillen Fusiliers (27th Foot) at the age of 15 and at 18 volunteered for active service in the Zulu War and was transferred to the South Wales Borderers (24th Foot). He was one of the few survivors of the Battle of Rorke's Drift (1879). The following year he was invalided out of the army but again joined the colours at the outbreak of WWI serving in 9th Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles (36th Divison) on duties within Northern Ireland. Next to this mural is another depicting his funeral in 1936. Image] http://vimeo.com/71263324

Somme Memorial, Moscow Street, Belfast
This extravagant memorial to the Battle of the Somme - in which the 36th Ulster Division suffered heavy losses - is sited over what is left of Moscow Street on the Shankill Road. Moscow Street originally consisted of terraces leading up to Riga Street (note the Eastern European theme emerging) - the street has now vanished under Crimea Court, this being all that is left.

Monument to the 36th Ulster Division's involvement in the Battle of the Somme
In Moscow Street off the loyalist Shankill Road. In September 1914, the Ulster Division was formed from the Ulster Volunteer Force which raised thirteen battalions for the three Irish regiments based in Ulster: the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, the Royal Irish Fusiliers and the Royal Irish Rifles. The Division suffered heavy losses in the Battle of Albert on 1 July 1916 and then was relieved on 2 July, having suffered 5104 casualties of who approximately 2069 died.
