Belfast, Sunflower
Good Beer Guide-listed public house on Union Street; a single bar, left, with drinking area right, and food in evenings; garden, and former security grille at the entrance. Walls are decorated with posters and photos; there is a pleasant ambience. No cask ale was on offer at my visit, because of heavy consumption the previous evening.

The "Sunflower" bar, Belfast
See Image (October 2009). The premises have now re-opened. They retain the security grille/cage around the front door as a novelty item although there seems to be pressure, from officialdom, to have it removed. During The Troubles/The Armed Struggle inner-city bars were identified with a particular “side” and were frequent (underlined in bold) targets for bombings and shootings carried out by the “other side”. The grille (of which this was a typical example) was an absolute necessity to protect the customers. See also Image
