The Europa Buscentre, Belfast
Built in 1990 to replace Glengall Street Bus Station - which was effectively part of the old Great Victoria Street station (see Image) which ceased to function as a railway station in 1976, only to be rebuilt in 1995. The upper storeys are part of a National Car Parks multi-storey. This shot shows the relatively quiet time between 2pm and 3pm.

The Europa Buscentre, Belfast
The Europa Buscentre Image replaced the old Gt Victoria Street bus station Image and provided considerably better facilities. Departure stands 12 – 15 with a Goldliner express for Dublin on the left. See also Image (July 1976) for a “then and now” comparison.

Gt Victoria Street bus station, Belfast
Gt Victoria Street station (usually the “GNR”) opened in 1848. In 1964, with the closure of the ex-GNR(I) lines to Londonderry and Warrenpoint, it lost platforms 5 and 6 to the adjacent bus station. In 1970 most of the building was demolished to make way for the Europa Hotel. What remained suffered several bomb attacks. In 1974 it closed completely (it re-opened in 1995) and part was included in the bus station. The 17.30 Belfast – London express is leaving. Cross-Channel passengers had the advantage of boarding under what remained of the former train shed. Local travellers boarded in the elements. A grim and dingy hole – I used it for 16 years. Now replaced by a proper bus station renamed the “Europa Buscentre”.

Two posters advertising shipping services, situated beside the entrance to No. 1 Platform. Belfast - Heysham closed on 5 April 1975. However, a seasonal Belfast - Isle of Man service still exists, but sadly with more modern vessels, see: Image]
