St Mary's, Chapel Lane, Belfast's Oldest Catholic Church
The original church dates from 1784 and was extended to its present size in the 1860s and again in the 1940s. The Lourdes Grotto to the right of the church was constructed in the 1950s. The 1784 church was to a substantial degree paid for by Protestant well-wishers. Prior to this the city's Catholics had worshipped in a graveyard and in private houses. On the day of its opening a guard of honour of the Protesant 1st Belfast Volunteer Company was lined up in the church yard and presented arms as the parish priest arrived at the church. The photograph was taken from Bank Square.
