Pedestrian sign, Belfast
This sign, at Castle Junction, was a bit of a novelty when erected – after all the locals knew where the places were and there were very few tourists in those days. The Post Office has been demolished to make way for the Castle Court Image and York Road Image to make way for the M3. For a later version see Image

Calvert House, Belfast
Calvert House, Castle Junction Image, was completed in 1985 to an award-winning design by Kennedy Fitzgerald. The tragedy was that it replaced Lanyon’s Ulster Club of 1863. Whatever the architectural merits of the present building it upset the harmony of that part of the street (see page 2 of “No Mean City” – Friar’s Bush Press, Belfast 1983). The Ulster Club (if my memory is correct) was, unfortunately, beyond saving (by the standards of the time). Continue to Image
