Belfast Central Library
A quiet corner in Belfast Central Library. I've passed this spot, located on a small landing on the stairs between the first and second floors, hundreds of times over the years but had never seen this perfect lighting effect before and it stopped me in my tracks. There are only a few days in mid-October when the sun is in the optimum position and low enough in the sky to shine down the narrow street opposite and through the small window at the perfect angle and I was just lucky enough to be passing at the right time. And of course if it's cloudy it's lost.

This view is along Royal Avenue from its junction with Donegall Street. The offices of the Belfast Telegraph are seen with the Central Library further along the avenue. The library is classically styled and was built in 1888, to the designs of W.H.Lynn with extensions added in 1962 and 1980. The day the library was opened in 1888 was also the day that Belfast was ceremonially granted city status and the library as a civic institution is thus symbolic of the beginning of a new era in the history of Belfast. Listed, grade A, there are many details and much history at: http://www.doeni.gov.uk/niea/content-databases-buildview?id=17185
