'The Holmes', Stoke Bishop, Bristol
A Victorian merchant's mansion now owned by Bristol University and one time HQ of General Omar Bradley and the US First Army from where he planned the Normandy landings of World War ll. He brought with him the best chef in the Army and was not reduced to the wartime rations of normal British residents.

The Holmes, Churchill Hall, Bristol, in 1960
Part of a Hall of Residence for the University of Bristol. Back in 1960 we students lived in style. There was a billiards room with a full-size table, and the baths had enormous taps delivering a torrent of scalding-hot water. This photo was probably taken in October.

The Botanic Gardens also include a number of sculptures; most are made of natural materials and depict various creatures involved with plants, but there are also some more abstract works.

The big pond
Bristol University Botanic Gardens have moved over the years. An original grant was used to create a garden near the University at Royal Fort, before finally coming here. Previously, it was a residence built in 1879 along with 1.77 hectares (4.4 acres) of garden space. In the Second World War, senior American staff occupied it whilst preparing for D-Day. But the old gardens in Bracken Hill were relocated to this site - The Holmes - in 2005.
