More accurately, Berkeley Trapezoid. The north side is formed by a plain but dignified terrace of late Georgian houses, each of three bays with rusticated ground floor and pedimented doorcase. Built c1800, probably by William Paty. Grade II* listed. Most of the square is now in institutional use, the University of Bristol having a large stake.

Berkeley Square sculpted cross
Quite a strange history: Bristol's original High Cross was erected in the fourteenth century and remained at the crossroads of the old city until it was moved to College Green in 1733, and thence to Stourhead in 1768. A replacement High Cross was designed by John Thomas in 1851, featuring a statue of Edward III. More monarchs were added, work by Harry Hems of London. But the stay at the Green was short and the truncated spire was removed again in 1950 to the Square where they remain. Hems sculpted three other works that face around the monument: Henry VI, Elizabeth I and Charles I. See Image Grade II listed.
