Pangolin mural, Robert Street, Easton, Bristol
The mural on the corner of Stapleton Road is the work of street artist Louis Masai. Text underneath the mural is PANGOLIN - THE MOST TRAFFICKED ANIMAL IN THE WORLD.
The main threat to pangolins is the illegal wildlife trade. Their scales are used in traditional Chinese medicine on the false assumption that they are a cure for numerous diseases and ailments, despite the fact that they are made out of keratin, the same material as human nails and rhino horn. Pangolins are eaten as a delicacy in Vietnam and China, and their habitat is diminishing because of unsustainable logging, mining and human development.
