West along the A38 near Felton, Somerset
The viewpoint is a layby handy for waiting for a phone call to collect one's spouse from the nearby Bristol International Airport. It presents an opportunity to photograph part of the A38, one of the most romantic highways in all of England, running as it does for about 300 kms from the delights of central Mansfield in Nottinghamshire to the rural idyll of Tiverton Parkway railway station in Devon. On its way from north to south the A38 passes through or by tourist destinations such as the Toyota car factory, Branston (where the pickle comes from), Gravelly Hill (famed for its interchange), Martin Hussingtree, Newport (Glos not the one in the Celtic fringes), Lulsgate Bottom, Dunball, White Ball and Red Ball. The role of the A38 as a long-distance route from the East Midlands to the South West has long been superseded by the advent of the motorway network but if you want a romantic journey through the heart of England the A38 is hard to beat. It could be England's Route 66.
