2010 : A37 about to cross the River Chew at Pensford
Heading toward Whitchurch and Bristol. "PENSFORD ST. THOMAS, a parish in the hundred of Keynsham, county Somerset, 6 miles S. of Bristol. The parish, which is of small extent, is intersected by the river Chew. The village, which was formerly a market town, is situated partly in this and partly in the adjoining parish of Publow. The woollen cloth manufacture was formerly carried on here; but has long since declined. The inhabitants are now chiefly engaged in the adjacent collieries and copper mines. Several of the adherents of the unfortunate Duke of Monmouth were executed here by Jeffreys. The living is a curacy annexed to the vic, of Stanton-Drew, in the diocese of Bath and Wells. The church, dedicated to St. Thomas-a-Becket, is a stone structure with a venerable tower. There are places of worship for the Independents and Wesleyans. Fairs are held on the 6th May and 8th November." From The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland (1868) Transcribed by Colin Hinson © 2003" The above was copied from: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/SOM/Pensford/index.html

Old gum
It's always a pleasure to wander around somewhere you know, but not that well. Anything could be there waiting to be discovered; something completely unexpected; something that was a common sight once, but not now. Just off the main Wells Road is this old chewing gum dispensing machine. The graphics are now almost unreadable, and the comestibles must definitely be inedible! Has anyone got an old thrupenny?

Beware of the Chew!
Today it seems peaceful enough, but the River Chew lurks close by. People in the village still talk to this day of the terrible floods of 1968, when this meadow was completely covered.

Scarecrow trail in Pensford
Harvey Hext was a happy but unfortunate little boy who grew up in nearby Winford. He suffered not only with Downs Syndrome but also a rare form of cancer. Despite his fun-loving character and efforts by the doctors, he died in 2015 aged 9. He needed treatment which was not offered by the health services and a fund was raised to pay for it, but which is now part of a trust set up in his memory. The local Scarecrow trail has joined forces with Harvey's Storytime to benefit the children. This marker is on the bridge over the River Chew right by the primary school and warns of a 'scarecrow' nearby - can you work out what the goats will need to beware of? See Image

Bridge Troll!
Lurking mischievously by the bridge over the River Chew and taking up residence beside the primary school, a troll waits eagerly for passing goats to assail. See Image] for a warning sign.

A night in after a night out
Pensford's old village lock-up, where the occasional reveller would find themselves to sober up. It is a Grade II listed structure and a scheduled ancient monument. There are no signs that it is still in use, though. See Image] for a detail.
