Gate to the stones
A pleasingly rustic old kissing gate welcomes visitors to the stone circles of Stanton Drew. The monument is in the care of English Heritage, but on private farm land. Access is permitted from the farm gate with an honesty box.

Alice's Gate
The reference is simply to Lewis Carroll's famous tales in Wonderland - it looks like the sort of door she might have gone through. The entrance is actually part of the old Stanton Court garden wall of c.1753.

Mixed materials
A multitude of different building materials have been used in the construction of one of the walls to Stanton Court. The greenery is in fact a telegraph pole covered in ivy. This can be seen in an earlier photograph. Image

What are all these people doing in my field?
A young cow stands rather disgruntled in the field that just happens to have nationally important prehistoric stone circles. Being just a matter of a few months old, it would not realise that today is the Winter Solstice. Happens every year. And every Summer Solstice too.

Kissing gate, Stanton Drew
This must have been the gate to the pasture sometime in the past as it stands forlorn in the field now with only a cow looking on.

Early Spring?
The small triangular patch of greenery at the road junction appears to be a private garden. Even so, it is something of a surprise to see snowdrops with orange and purple crocuses out already.
