Stand here for the time
An analemmatic sundial (based in the ground rather than a wall) in front of St Mary's church. The bricks were made locally and used to provide the arc of the hours and the central point where the observer would stand to read the time. See Image] for a closer look.

Hours for Man...
...Eternity with God. This is the central feature of the analemmatic sundial near St Mary's church. It is designed to use the viewer as the gnomon (the upright part) to cast the shadow on the appropriate hour mark. Interestingly it is said to be 'set' to British Summer Time. See Image] for a wider view.

Grade I listed St Mary's Church, Thornbury
A view west from Park Road. The church's website states that a Norman church on this site was first mentioned in 1106. Only the north and south doors and font remain, reused in a later reconstruction. The present chancel was built c1340. The south aisle was added some decades later. With the exception of the chancel the church was rebuilt in the perpendicular style from just before 1500 until c1540 when the tower with the pinnacles seen here was completed. In 1848 the church was restored and improved under the supervision of Francis Niblett. The walls of the chancel were raised and the roof replaced. Grade I listing (the highest category) was awarded in March 1960.
