Fresh rock
The banks around the Siston Brook used to have plenty of small quarries that made much of the local Pennant stone; indeed, much of Bristol's early 1900s buildings are made of it. These days this is the only fresh extraction.

Willsbridge Mill
This magnificent mill stands on the Siston Brook. It was founded in 1712 and built from locally quarried Pennant Sandstone. A John Pearsall set up mills for rolling iron, especially for hoop iron. This worked well until the iron was used to make a roof of a London Docks building in 1811; it collapsed and so the mill was forced to change. By the early 1800s it was in the hands of the appropriately named Mills family, who converted it to flour production. One Alfred Parsons Bull took over the mill in the 1940s, this time grinding animal fodder. However, the ever-flowing Siston Brook turned into a hugely damaging torrent in the Great Flood of July, 1968. A fallen tree became a battering ram that broke the dam, causing massive damage. The mill could not be repaired and closed thereafter. Today, the mill is an education centre, run and maintained by the Avon Wildlife Trust.

Sit around the stone
Willsbridge Mill used to grind flour with two stones taking the power of the water to produce the goods. They were eventually taken out and placed into the yard floor outside the mill; as with much of the area it has become a functional seating place and adorned with carved texts.

On unsteady ground
The Siston Brook was primarily used for milling, but there was also a number of stone quarrying sites on the valley. Pennant stone was found in abundance and used to create a lot of Bristol's buildings around 1900. Today, the vegetation has tried to re-establish itself, if precariously.

A nice place to chew the fat
Willsbridge Mill has retained the grindstones and used them to good effect; beyond are the old barns, now used for education and a popular café.
