Faded signs by the old pump
The High Street in Banwell really is high - above the village! The ancient road is lined with houses mainly from the nineteenth century and has a characteristically awkward disposition to motor cars. Behind the signs is an old water pump - see .

High water
The old pump on High Street used to serve the community from Victorian times. The chain suggests it might still be capable of drawing up Mendip water even today.

Top of the pump
The water pump is a fine piece of iron with the top finished off with this design. The pump bears no manufacturer's name or title.

Looking down from High Street
This narrow path among the houses existed long before they did. High Street originally was well apart from the lower reaches of Banwell until the twentieth century brought lots of expansion.

Looking up Hillpath
Appropriately named, for the short road leads up at an even steeper rate than the High Street. The houses along here are noticeably older than those below.

Twinning on West Street
This large stone marks the twinning of Banwell with the French village of Potigny in 1999. Potigny is a small village of less than 2,000 residents in Normandy and the Twinning Association continues to stay in touch.

Village car park
Banwell is a relatively small place strung out along the main A371 to Weston-Super-Mare. Buildings that used to stand beside The Grange and on the road until fairly recent times were demolished to leave space for parking. It also offers a public phone box that appears to actually have a telephone in it!
