Edith Cavell blue plaque in Clevedon
The plaque is on the wall of 1 Elton Road. Edith Louisa Cavell, born 1865, was a British nurse celebrated for saving the lives of soldiers from both sides in the Great War, and in helping about 200 Allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium, for which she was arrested and court-martialled. Under German military law, she was found guilty of treason and sentenced to death. Despite international pressure for mercy, she was shot by a German firing squad in October 1915. Her execution received worldwide condemnation and extensive press coverage.
