House by an old railway line
The remains of the Portishead branch line which closed to passengers in 1964, seen from the road bridge to Sheepway. This was the site of Portbury Station and even now there are plans to re-open the line to passenger traffic to enable the commuters of Portishead to easily get into Bristol. Portbury Railway Station
The passenger service on the Portishead branch ended on 5th September 1964 but Portbury station had already closed to all traffic, on 30th April 1962. Goods traffic to & from Portishead, primarily cement, woodpulp, & coal for the power station, continued until 1981. In 2002 the branch was partially re-opened to a point almost 2 miles from Portbury station to serve the new Royal Portbury Dock (opened in 1978). Pressure for the complete branch to be re-opened to passenger traffic started within 2 years of its withdrawal & continues to this day. For a 2009 photo taken from almost the same spot see: Image Date of photo uncertain but circa 1966.
