Strive upwards
A piece of public art in London Square, Portishead: Michael Disley has sculpted this work to note part of the town's history. In the nineteenth century an old wooden ship, the B.T.S. Formidable, was moored off the coast to home and train poor, homeless, orphan boys. The venture was officially inaugurated with a speech by the Reverend Charles Kingsley, who quoted Tennyson's words 'Strive upwards working out the beast and let the ape and the tiger die'.

Marking the lifeboat trust
A stone plaque has been placed high up on an end wall, some time after the house was built. It was created by Michael Disley and recognises the contribution made by the life-savers. See Image] for the location.

'Towards the sky'
When the Portishead dock area was being lined up for regeneration, a number of public artworks were commissioned. Ann Christopher, R.A., was the first to bring a touch of quality with this large iron sculpture in 2000. It is deliberately non-linear and is made of Corten steel, which gains a distinctive rusty coating.
