Slag heap, Avonmouth
Behind the premises of Anglian Windows and BM Foods lie the remains of a huge waste heap from the Britannia smelting works, "home to the largest and most efficient zinc blast furnace in the world" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Smelting_Company . Part of the spoil has been removed to make way for a distribution centre to the north, although progress has been hindered by the legacy of mustard gas production on the site during the First World War, and a mustard gas shell discovered in 2012 had to be disposed of at Porton Down.
