The drinking fountain is a product of Walter Macfarlane and Company's foundry based at the Saracen Foundry, Possilpark, Glasgow. The firm made lots of cast works available to purchase from a catalogue, and this fountain is frame number eight with font number seven in the centre. Victorian works are often full of symbolic designs: the griffins were popularly thought of as guardians of priceless possessions, salamanders display bravery and courage that cannot be extinguished by fire, and cranes symbolise vigilance. Other notes include biblical verses.

Victorian symbolism is a strong part of the drinking fountain in Shirehampton. Built to mark Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, it is a monument designed and built from the catalogue of Glasgow iron founders, Walter Macfarlane and Company.

The George Inn, Shirehampton
The present pub is a modern rebuilding of the original, which has a much longer history in the old village. The old one was smaller and stood where the pavement now lies.
