Welcome to Shirehampton Village, Bristol
The welcome sign on a lamppost is near the point behind the camera where the B4054 Shirehampton Road became the B4054 Park Hill, at the eastern edge of Shirehampton. Now part of Bristol, Shirehampton was formerly a separate village. It retains something of a village atmosphere, and is still regarded as a village by many of its inhabitants. The name sign is an indicator of that sentiment.

South face of the fountain
The drinking fountain is a product of Walter Macfarlane and Company's foundry based at the Saracen Foundry, Possilpark, Glasgow. The firm made lots of cast works available to purchase from a catalogue, and this fountain is frame number eight with font number seven in the centre.
Victorian works are often full of symbolic designs: the griffins were popularly thought of as guardians of priceless possessions, salamanders display bravery and courage that cannot be extinguished by fire, and cranes symbolise vigilance. Other notes include biblical verses.
