Lewes Station
This used to be a very important station, where there were lines to East Grinstead and Uckfield as well as those which exist now. There is a strongly-supported case for a re-instatement of the Uckfield to Lewes line, so come on, McLoughlin, you tell us HS2 is needed to provide increased capacity, fork out about 1% of this money and re-instate Uckfield to Lewes.

This is the platform that would have served the former line to Uckfield and beyond. The CCTV camera observes the entrance to the station from the adjacent car park.

Eastward from Lewes station, 2000
View from the east end of Platform 2, towards Eastbourne and Hastings, also Newhaven and Seaford. Until 24/2/69 lines branched off to the left here, curving round to the north, eventually to London via Oxted. At Culver Junction one line (closed 17/5/58) went left to East Grinstead via Horsted Keynes, Whence it has become the heritage Bluebell Railway. To the right at Culver Junction went the line via Uckfield and Erith, to Oxted and London, also to Tunbridge Wells West: this line remains in full use northward from Uckfield; it has also been restored at Isfield as the heritage Lavender Line. Restoration from Lewes to Uckfield has for long been sought.
