Dolphin Cottage
The cottage is opposite Image at the crossroads at the centre of the village. School Lane is in the foreground, Church Lane heads off to the left, Church Hill runs straight ahead and The Wyshe goes north. The medieval village of Pyecombe lay down the slope from the church whose tower is obscured by the trees next to the road sign. Sometime in the 16th century this settlement was deserted and moved itself to the north and became Pyecombe Street leaving the church pretty much isolated. However, the growth of Brighton and the need for communications between that town and London lead to a turnpike road which initially ran up what is now Church Lane and continued northwards through The Wyshe opening in 1775. The Plough Inn soon followed and a new settlement reappeared around the church and grew through the 19th century until it became the more populated part of Pyecombe once more.
