Castle Lane, Bramber
The old highway linking Steyning to Bramber that was superseded by a new turnpike to the south in 1764 that is still the main route between the two today. Bramber Castle itself would have once towered over the trees at the far end of the lane but now its ruins lie concealed by them. This portion of the road is located to the east of the current bypass which has cut off the old through route. Prior to its construction in 1981 and before the railway closed in 1966 the lane crossed the track by an old level crossing.

Path along top of Bramber Castle rampart
There is an extremely deep dry ditch on the right, inner, side of the rampart. A photograph was taken into it, but it did not convey the depth at all. The drop on the outer side is also considerable. Formidable fortifications!

Bramber Castle: curtain wall
A motte-and-bailey castle was built here a few years after the Conquest, but these sections of the curtain wall date from the 14th century.
