Art College, Grand Parade
On the other side of the junction of Grand Parade and Kingswood Street is the Art College part of Brighton University. There has been an Art College on this site since 1876 but the original design was redesigned and rebuilt between 1965-67 and currently dominates this section of Grand Parade. The houses to the south of the college date from 1790 and were originally called Town Row. Click on the link to take you to the next page. http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/231403

1, Edward Street, Brighton
An office block built in 1990 and currently occupied by the Brighton and Sussex Family Court Hearing Centre. The building replaced a former omnibus depot and the Dog Tray public house which had been built in the 1930s as the start of a road widening scene in Edward Street that was not completed until the late 1960s. The Dog Tray pub was a rebuild of a much older beer house that was open by 1854. The Dog Tray is the name of one of the dogs in Shakespeare's King Lear; "The little dogs and all, Tray, Blanch, and Sweetheart—see, they bark at me."

Shops, Grand Parade
Swift Sports on the right has been here since the 1960s and is the last proper sports shop left in Brighton not one of these cut price sports equipment/casual fashion abominations.

Edward Street
Viewed from the junction with Pavilion Parade. Originally the street was a narrow one that climbed the hill to the east of the Old Steine to the junction with Upper and Lower Rock Gardens. From about the 1930s onwards it began to be redeveloped initially the area on the left which became a bus depot and a pub called the Dog Tray which was later demolished to make way for the current buildings. The rest of the northern side came down during the 1960s to construct a dual carriageway which would take traffic out of the town though with a remarkable lack of foresight the planners were unable to acquire land around Brighton College and the Royal Sussex Hospital to continue the carriageway leaving its current end outside the area that was once Kemp Town station. A consequence of the widening was the construction of new buildings for the city's police and courts and from the late 1970s the European headquarters of American Express who remain one of Brighton's major employers.

William Street, Brighton
The road runs between Edward street and Kingswood Street and was originally developed in 1815 though nothing remains from that period. The eastern side was cleared in the mid 1930s and is now occupied by either the Law Courts or Police Station. The western side had to wait until the 1960s before that was cleared and has been replaced by the County Court on the immediate left and buildings belonging to the University of Brighton further on.
