Smugglers Inn, Alfriston
As its name suggests the house has historical connections with smuggling that was rife in the area during the 18th and early 19th centuries. Formerly known as Market Cross House (It is on the western side of Market Cross Square) the whole house is riddled with passages and doorways - 21 rooms, 47 doors and 6 staircases as well as a large cellar and small hiding place in the attic, all designed to confuse excise officers and aid escape.

The Star Inn, Alfriston.
This popular half-timbered inn dates back to the 14th Century. It is notable for the many carvings on it and also for the bright red wooden figure at its street corner (probably an old ship's figurehead). The rooftiles are stone "Horsham slabs". Alfriston High Street.
Double yellow lines are necessary to keep the traffic flowing through the narrow village street. Many tourists are attracted here by the old buildings such as the Star and George Inns above. In the distance is the village market place.
