The Star Inn, High Street, was built in the 14th century. Close-studded timber framed with plaster infill, jettied to the street on a moulded bressumer with a corner post carved with figures of animals. The roof is of Horsham stone slabs. There are three oriel windows with coves below decorated with carved figures. There are extensive modern additions to the rear. Listed, grade II*, with details at: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1353267 Alfriston is a village in East Sussex, some 6½ miles northwest of Eastbourne and 3½ miles northeast of Seaford. The village lies on the west bank of the Cuckmere River. There is evidence of occupation in the Neolithic period, with several long barrows on the surrounding downs. The village is home to The Star Inn, built in 1345 to accommodate monks and pilgrims en route from Battle Abbey to Chichester Cathedral. Also in the village is the Old Clergy House, the first building acquired by the National Trust in 1898.

The Star Inn
Located on High Street next to the junction with Star Lane. Built as the Star of Bethlehem in the 1260s by Battle Abbey as a hostelry for those making the pilgrimage westwards to Chichester it is believed to be one of the oldest pubs in the country. The current building dates from the 15th century and still contains a sanctuary post whereby those escaping from secular laws could touch the post and claim protection from the church. Since the 1520s it has been known as The Star Inn.

The Star, Alfriston
A wedding party outside of the Star Inn. Originally a religious hostel built in 1345 and used to accommodate monks and pilgrims en route from Battle Abbey to the shrine of St Richard, patron saint of Sussex, at Chichester Cathedral, it became an inn in the 16th century. Wooden figures grace the upper part of the building, whilst in the front is a one-time ship's figurehead representing a red lion. The latter is connected with the Alfriston smuggling gang who used the inn as a base; their leader was transported to Australia in 1830.
