Polegate signal box
This signal box controls the level crossing as well as the railway signals at Polegate station. The level crossing gates are down, indicating that a train is about to pass.

Looking south towards the downs - Combe Hill can be seen in the distance. Polegate Railway Station can be seen on the left with the spire of St John's Church on the other side of the railway.

Train leaving Polegate station
A train leaving Polegate station, heading west towards Brighton. The front of the train is on the level crossing. The crossing gates are down, with traffic queueing. To the left of the picture is a semaphore signal. This is an older type of railway signal which has not yet been replaced by coloured lights.
The railway here is electrified using the "third rail" system. The train, however, is powered by diesel as part of its journey was over a line which is not electrified.

Polegate level crossing
Compare this picture to Image
The train has now crossed the level crossing and is heading off into the distance. The semaphore signal has dropped to horizontal, to show "stop". The crossing gates have been raised, allowing pedestrians and traffic to cross the railway.
