Luxury apartments opposite the Marina, grade 2 listed

Opened in 1896 in association with the French government and French hospital in London for retired and ill French nationals living in the United Kingdom. It remained and such until 1986 when it became a nursing home which in turn was closed in 1999 and only averted demolition by being awarded grade II status. It has been redeveloped into luxury apartments.

Although facing Marine Parade it is in De Courcel Road a small street running parallel with the main A259. Built in 1898 to take in patients from the French Hospital in London it was run for years as a home for French and other foreign nationals until 1986 when it became registered as a nursing home until the trustees sold the site for development in 1999, Its demolition was averted by being given grade II listing and it was subsequently sold on and developed into luxury apartments. It is designed to look like a French chateau and initially only had one tower, the eastern one, before the other was added in 1904.

Built in 1896 as the French Convalescent Home and formally opened in 1898 to house recuperating French nationals resident in the UK. It more or less became a nursing home very early and was run by the nuns of the Sisters of St Paul or Chartres until 1994. The trustees sold the building to a property developer in 1999 and closed the institution in the same year. Listed status was sought and successfully acquired to prevent its demolition with the building subsequently converted into luxury apartments. To the right is Courcels, a block of flats built in 1971, whose most famous resident was actor and broadcaster Wilfred Pickles who lived here for the last ten years of his life.

A small workshop overlooking Image which I'm certain at some point in the last couple of decades was a small police station. Beyond is the sole remaining gas holder of the former Black Rock Gas Works.
