"Tornado" at Hampden Park Station, Eastbourne
Pictured here is number 60163 "Tornado" on its "Cathedral Express" run from Lewes to Salisbury and return. The train came to Hampden Park Station, Eastbourne, in order to turn around before picking up passengers in Lewes. Norman Baker, MP for Lewes and Minister of Transport, boarded the train at Lewes. He was dressed in a boiler suit in order to ride on the footplate for part of the journey. Tornado is a recreation of an LNER Peppercorn 'A1' steam locomotive. Originally there were 49 of these trains but the last one, "St Mungo", was scraped in 1966. In 1990, a group of steam train enthusiasts got together to construct a new Peppercorn Class A1 Pacific. In 2008, this train moved for the first time under its own steam. This locomotive featured in the BBC's "Top Gear" when Jeremy Clarkson was on board the train racing against James May in a 1949 Jaguar XK120 and Richard Hammond on a 1949 Black Shadow motorbike.
