Eastern Terrace Mews, BRIGHTON, BN2 1EP

A view of the entrance to the mews on St George's Road. The original mews was built as service areas and stables for Eastern Terrace probably in thel ate 1820s and was rebuilt in 1989.

The eastern end of the road where the shops and services are a little more sparse. The road is the B2118 which runs from here westwards to St James's Street first as the current road, then Bristol Road and finally Upper St James's Street and throughout much of its length is lined with shops, pubs and other local services.

The building is located on the corner of Paston Place and was built in 1892 as a mausoleum for the Sassoon family who lived in a neighbouring house. Two generations of the family were buried here but a third decided to sell it in 1933 and moved the graves to London. After that the building was used as a furniture repository, boxing club and air raid shelter. In 1949 it was purchased by a brewery who attached it to the neighbouring Hanbury Arms and used as an entertainment venue known as the Hanbury Ballroom. The pub closed in 2006 and since then a number of ventures have passed through with the latest occupants Proud Cabaret running a combined restaurant and cabaret experience since 2011.

The white building was once the Belgrave Arms public house that operated from the 1850s until its closure in 1936 when it was converted into flats.

A cul de sac off Sudeley Place that was built in the 1830s when there was a mill nearby at the top end of Sudeley Place. Known as Taylor's Mill it was moved in the 1840s to the top of Sussex Street where Image remains as a reminder.

Possibly one of the most exclusive terraces in the city. All nine buildings are grade II listed and have had a variety of the great and good residing in them. Number 1 was owned by Sudeleys from 1836-76 and the Sassoons (See also Image) from 1876 to 1912, became the Court Royal Hotel in 1914 and was later converted into flats known today as Court Royal Mansions. Two 19th century MPs, Thomas Cave and James Ashbury resided at numbers 4 and 6 respectively, the latter put up Ulysses S Grant, ex Civil War general and American President, for three days in 1877. Number 9, which faces the photographer at the far end has been home to an ex-Home Secretary and deposed King of Portugal and was used as a convalescent home during the First World War. It later became a hotel, the Royal Sussex, then part of the Municipal Training College until the 1970s. It has returned to residential use though you would have needed £3 million to purchase it in 2004.
