Sussex House, Abbey Road, Kemp Town, Brighton
The site was originally intended in 1825 for Portland House which burnt down before it was completed. Eventually it would be replaced by three smaller houses, West House, Portland House and Portland Lodge, and confusingly numbered 12-14 Portland Place, the road it faces. They were later merged into one, West House, and acquired by the St Dunstans Institute in 1917 who renamed it Pearson House after its founder. When their premises at Ovingdean was completed in 1937 Pearson House became a training centre. In 1971 the building was refurbished retaining the facade but completely redeveloping the interior. St Dunstans vacated the premises in 1995 and the block was taken over by the NHS who renamed it Sussex House and is now part of the Royal Sussex Hospital complex. A veteran car can just be seen in the shadows on St George's Road on its way home after the trip down from London.
