Eastbourne is a town and seaside resort on the south coast of East Sussex, some 54 miles south of London and about 19 miles east of Brighton. Although there is evidence of settlement from the Stone Age onwards, Eastbourne remained an area of small rural settlements until the railway arrived in 1849. A resort, built "for gentlemen by gentlemen", was planned and the town's growth accelerated from a population of less than 4,000 in 1851 to nearly 35,000 by 1891. Tourism is a large and important part of the economy of the town.

Crowds at Eastbourne?s Platinum Jubilee themed Carnival
This photo is taken from close to the entrance of the pier and it looks southwest over the Carpet Gardens and the adjoining streets. Eastbourne’s Carnival normally takes place on the last Bank Holiday in May but the date was changed this year to the 4th of June to coincide with the celebrations of Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The theme of Eastbourne’s Carnival was the Platinum Jubilee. The route of the Carnival was from Western Lawns to Princes Park with the photo showing a scene on Grand Parade in the vicinity of the Burlington Hotel. Eastbourne’s Carnival is the largest such event in the South East with approximately 25,000 spectators.
