Eastbourne Library, Eastbourne, East Sussex
The photo shows Eastbourne Library on Grove Road in Eastbourne town centre. The new central library was opened in 1964, and it replaced the Technical Institute and Free Library, which had previously stood on the same site. The Technical Institute came into being in 1903 with His Grace the Duke of Devonshire laying the foundation stone. The Technical Institute was built on land given by the Duke of Devonshire, and it was supported by a donation of £10,000 from Andrew Carnegie. The majestic building of the Technical Institute contained a library, museum, municipal boys’ school, and a school of art, but all this came to an abrupt end when the building was badly damaged during a large air raid of up to eighteen aircraft on June 4, 1943.
