Tapsel Gate, Church of St Simon & St Jude, East Dean, East Sussex
The tapsel gate is (as far as I know) unique to this part of East Sussex. The gate revolves around a central pivot and was designed to allow prayers to be said over the coffin before a burial. The coffin would be rested on the gate as the pall bearers stood either side.

Cottage at East Dean
This could have been summer but it was the Sunday at the start of half term in October. Like so many other days in October 2018 it was a beautiful warm day with a deep blue sky from beginning to end. East Dean village has an attractive triangular green with a variety of cottages. This is one of them.

Tapsel gate at East Dean Church, East Sussex
This photo shows a Tapsel gate at the Grade 1 listed St Simon and St Jude church in East Dean, East Sussex. A Tapsel gate is a variety of wooden gate which is virtually unique to Sussex. It can be rotated 90° around a central pivot in either direction before coming to a stop at two fixed points. It was named after a Sussex family member, probably John Tapsel, who invented it in the late 18th century. The six surviving examples all lie within a 16 kilometre or 10 mile radius of Lewes, the county town of East Sussex.

Tapsel gate viewed from the churchyard, East Dean, East Sussex
This photo of a Tapsel gate, in a closed position, was taken while looking west from inside the churchyard of St Simon and St Jude's, East Dean. Tapsel gates have an ingenious design which allows them to prevent cattle or other large farm animals from accidentally straying into the churchyard. An additional benefit of Tapsel gate is that it allows pallbearers to temporarily rest a coffin on its entrance to or its exit from a church.
