Town Quay, River Arun
A reminder of the former port that once existed in the town. There were quays and wharves from medieval times onwards and Arundel was the chief port of the river until the 18th century though trade declined due to problems with the estuary and the growing competition of Littlehampton. The building of a canal linking Portsmouth to Chatham briefly resurrected trade but improvements to the Arun estuary and the arrival of the railway undermined the trade once more. The last boat used the quays in 1914. The quay itself was rebuilt in 1802 though many of the warehouses have now been converted into residences.
