Lower, lower!
When Queen Victoria declared her intention to visit the Duke of Norfolk he had this section of Maltravers Street lowered to aid a comfortable passage to the castle- and yes she was amused!

Flint-built cottages at the downhill end of Maltravers Street, Arundel
Maltravers Street is one of the most attractive residential streets in Arundel, the tone set by substantial Georgian properties, but there are cottages of various dates jumbled in among them. These are at the lower - west - end of the street, near the junction with King Street. Along much of Maltravers Street the footway runs a few feet above the roadway, as seen here.

Arundel - Kings Arms Hill
This lane which connects Tarrant Street to Maltravers Street (but only for pedestrians or residents) is called Kings Arms Hill. It takes its name from the Kings Arms P.H. at the bottom of the hill (behind the camera on the left).
