Firemark, King Street, Arundel
Over the doorway of Chantry Cottage, which is a small - and very pleasant - Georgian house, at the uphill end of the street. The glossy paint on this little plaque obscures some details, but I believe the oval carries an image of sailing ships at sea. For the history of firemarks see http://www.moleseyhistory.co.uk/books/surrey/fireplaques/index.html The house itself is of red brick, the firemark being placed on a panel of blue, vitrified brick above the doorway. The panel of blue brick fills a blank window. Notice the 'header bond' - all the bricks are laid with their ends exposed (something often seen in Arundel).
